Repairing a ding in poly finish

What's Hot

Is there a way to repair this ding in black gloss poly finish? It’s just less than a cm long, and has made a slight dimple in the poly as well as the mark which you can just detect with a fingernail.

Would the mark likely polish out?

Black nail varnish drop fill, really thin coats a day apart until it is proud of the body, scrape it back when fully cured with a new Stanley blade, put masking tape either side of the blade leaving a gap the width of the scar.
Then a few grades of wet and dry paper and polish to finish.

Or black superglue if you can find it, same process as above.
This has worked great for me many times.

Would totally leave that myself. But I do like relics.

Before you start a drop fill & bodge it to buggery - try the soldering iron and damp rag trick
Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

Full disclosure - I did this, it’s the first ding, and it’s Esther’s guitar. *hangs head in shame*

Hmmm I’ve used that on an unfinished fretboard edge to good effect but I’d worry the hot iron will cloud up the poly irreversibly.

That only really works well if there's exposed wood, the point is to rehydrate the wood fibers which will swell, I can't see the op pic clearly on my phone but it doesn't look like it broke through to the wood?

I'm doing a few drop fills with superglue right now, this thread got me off my arse and into action on this beater Westone.

I say don't touch it. You can easily make it much worse.

Just fess up and ask forgiveness.

I think it’s just dented and marked the top coat - it’s not made it through to undercoat (if there is one) or wood.

Just needs a scrape back and polish. You won't notice them after that.

I've snagged 2 good t-shirts on that gouge and don't fancy a third.
These pics are all wet glue, not exactly the finished article

I’d be interested is seeing the process you use to flatten/polish the glue and the finished result.

Same process as the stewmac video posted above, I'll post pics tomorrow when I've finished if I remember.

Have you heard of gas lighting? It's great, just tell her she did it herself and if she suggests it was you tell her she's gone mad.
