Improving volume pot cleanup /50s wiring question

I have a PRS SE Tremonti that I had new 17 years ago. Overtime I have replaced the pickups with bare knuckle mules and changed the wiring harness, switch and jack with a pre wired loom from Charles Guitars when the original switch and pots got very crackly.
The guitar has always had a very poor cleanup from the volume pots, as if you roll down beyond about 8.5 it quickly gets very dark and woolly sounding.
Would changing to 50s wiring help?
