have a newish Squier esquire which is a great little guitar

jack socket is loose howvere

looked at the interweb and various fixes proposed which seem mutually exclusive, from taking the switch panel out and using your finger while you tighten , to buying a special tool, and several things in between

before I do either, any good experience / suggestion from the experienced masses?

Its the circular socket with a hex nut, no little Phillips screw on the side

    Morning,

You shouldn’t need any special tools for this, pop out the two screws holding the control plate and use your finger to put pressure on the back of the jack (watch the wire connections).

Add One drop only of loctite to the thread on the outer part (or super glue if you don’t have loctite), tighten and leave for a few minutes.

    Cheers

Has the cup come loose in the guitar body, or the socket come loose in the cup?

If it’s just the socket come loose, it will be a cheap flimsy far-east socket and may not have a grip washer. Your best option is to replace it with a genuine Switchcraft jack, with a grip washer - these can stand being tightened up much tighter and will lock the whole thing together properly.

If the cup has come loose in the body, the best solution is an Electrosocket - these are threaded for a Switchcraft jack so you would need one as well.

If that all looks too expensive you can do it cheaply by gluing the cup into the body with epoxy, and re-using the existing jack (with a grip washer if it doesn’t have one).

No, you should not have to do these things really!

Save yourself a life of pain and get a proper jack socket which screws to the outside of the body!

I have in the past repositioned the claw thing and fixed the problem but an Electrosocket with a Switchcraft jack socket, ( about £8 on eBay ),  is probably the best fix.
