What is Tort?

I know what the tortoise shell pickguards look like of course but what does that pattern actually come from?

Is there a raw material that looks like that naturally?

Or was it created for pickguards? Created for something else?

From this lil guy, the Hawksbill Sea Turtle.
Massively endangered due to the amount they’ve been hunted (and still are) for their shells.

I believe the shell goes soft and pliable in hot water, which is how its shaped etc.
Though there is hardly any info online as to how products are actually made, ie: go from the shell to say a pickguard with the pattern we are all familiar with.

Good thing really as its illegal. Would have thought there was an historic ‘how its made’ somewhere though.

Obviously pickguards, picks and jewellery now a days are all made from resins or celluloid instead but mimic the look.

Below are real/illegal items from Costa Rica.

But the general Tortoiseshell pattern comes from the Hawksbill Turtles shell.

The only easy day, was yesterday...

Tort in pickguards has nearly always been celluloid as far as I know.

Check out the Spitfire Tort Homepage for more info. The guy essentially pours his own to great results and with a price to match

$250 for a scatchplate.  I'm in the wrong job.

I don’t doubt that the price reflects the effort and skill involved, but yeah, premium product.

The problem with cheaper torts is that a lot of it looks like corned beef, vintage tort (and the Spitfire stuff) really has the 3D quality

I must admit that I really don't like the look of Spitfire's Tort guards. I know they are supposedly more vintage correct, but they always look off to me for some reason.
