I know this is going to be a contentious issue and I also understand that Multi-FX units aren't going to give you godly tone in general but I'm looking for a multi-FX unit on a low to mid level budget.
I just play at home and rather than having a few pedals and getting caught up in the wires etc I'd like decent sounding multi-FX.
Now the TC Electronic Nova system springs to mind but at £300 it's kind of hitting my budget limit. I might sell my Vox Lil NT head and cab to recoup some funds but I'm generally looking around £200 tops if possible!
Would also like it to put a backing track through it if I can and maybe a patch editor?
I've used a POD HD 500 but I couldn't really get on with it, maybe it just clashed with my amp but I just found it a little overwhelming too with all it's layouts and features.
Maybe I'm asking too much?
Opinions appreciated!

Zoom G3.
Only multi I've liked, but I prefer stompies, so sold it
Ringleader of the Cambridge cartel, pedal champ and king of the dirt boxes (down to 21)
Second hand, you can get the g7.1ut. That's slightly older generation tech though so I don't know how it sounds...
I have a Digitech RP500 which I'd heartily recommend. Very easy to tweak, even live. Having said that, the Zoom G3 or G3X sound great from what I've heard, although if you need/ want pitch-shift effects, the Digitech does this a lot better. I have the MS70-CDR which has a lot of the same modulation models as the G3 and it sounds great.
The G3 is ok but I found the quality of the Nova System effects much better.
If I wanted something now I'd go for:
Nova sys but with a midi pedal to sort the switching out.
Line 6 pod xtlive - turn off the amp sims and use for fx and they sound fine with plenty of fx options.
Yamaha DG stomp - I still have one, very very easy to use and sounds great - not many of them still around but I wish they would reisssue them with 4 patches per bank and a noise gate.
