Helix stereo issue/AI gain/phase problem

Im a helix newbie. Wanted to run both XLR channels into 2 channels on my presonus AI and experiment with dual amp/stereo, but theres some wierd gain/phase thing happening, whereby the closer the gain levels are on each channel, the quieter the signal gets and when both channels have exact same gain the guitar is inaudible. Almost like some weird phase/cancellation thing going on? As soon as I turn gain up or down on one of the channels, the sound comes back. If i pull out one of the XLR's altogether its back to full volume?? HELP!
