Oh, Gibson... (good but OTT customer service)

What's Hot
Years ago I cracked the edge of one of the reflector knobs on my SG, through a cackhanded attempt at removing it. Annoyingly it doesn't seem like you can buy a single replacement, so bought the official 4-pack from Gibson and replaced them all.

Fast-forward a few years, and I thought it was a bit silly to have three perfectly fine reflector knobs just sitting there, might as well complete the set in case I want to use it on another guitar.

I took a punt on emailing Gibson's customer service to ask if I could buy a single unit. Amazingly they replied that provided I sent a pic of the broken knob and my SG's serial no, they would be happy to ship one to me free of charge.

Was expecting an enveloppe (maybe padded) to come at some point. This is what turned up today (from the Netherlands!). Put the knob on top for scale:

Absolutely filled with both bubble wrap AND air bags, too.

Kudos on great customer service, but I felt a little bit decadent... :#

They did something similar with a replacement screw for my TP6.  I think they just grab the first box that comes to hand.

I’d grass them up to Hugh Fearnley Whittingstal. He’s been getting a bit irate about this sort of thing for years

  • I also had great service from Gibson when they sent me a replacement part free of charge, in a small jiffy bag.

  • The packaging is for your benefit. You don't want your knob broken before you've had a chance to handle it.

  • Please post a picture of this knob cracking the second you push it onto your guitar  ;)

  • Man, wish I'd thought of this when I split a speed knob a few years ago! My Les Paul currently has one non-matching fake knob. You can only tell up close but it niggles me.

  • Gibson has actually learned there is such a thing as customer service!

    When did that happen?

Warwick sent me a couple of pots in a box of similar size, much to my surprise.

  • Years ago , before internet shopping I rang Gibson uk and bought a new pickup selector switch.
it came in 3 packages. One had the order . The 2nd the receipt, and the 3rd the actual switch . I thought that was ott as well , which is why I remembered it !
