NGD and some Gretsch porn for Gringo

What's Hot

The long awaited White Falcon arrived this morning and before I split the band up by selling one of these bad boys I wanted to get a group shot.

The White Falcon seems to have the best bits of the other 3 in one guitar - Im of course pleased with it as it’s new and it’s honeymoon time but it really does tick my Gretsch boxes.

1.Despite re size it’s light and easy to play like the NEddie Cochran
2. Has the warmth of the Country Gent
3. Has versatile pickups with a nice sparkly zing like the Broadkaster

It wasn’t cheap and I don’t want to sound like Ferris Bueller when he recommended everyone buy a vintage Ferrari but it’s way more playable and versatile than I expected - thoroughly recommended !

Back to playing it :-)

Those look amazing, tough call deciding which one goes if that’s what you decide to do. Look forward to reading your thoughts on the White Falcon.

I think Gringo might find it 'really quite ordinary looking' but only because its not his.

The singer in my band had a WF so oddly familiar guitar to me although I don't know anything about Gretsch really. Light, comfy, quite a fat neck ( the WF not our singer) and that amazing sound. The bridge would go flying on a frequent basis so he eventually gave up on it as a live instrument. Although when he did use it if anyone ever came to talk to the band after a gig  there was an 80% chance that the question was about that guitar.

Man you've really gone all in on the Gretsch

I think you are missing a nice Tennessee Rose in that collection :)

  • Thanks Daz, I just messaged a friend of ours and said it goes from Wendy Melvoin to Malcolm Young with just your volume control and it’s true - the pickups stay crispy even with the volume rolled off.

Wonderful. How do you find the B7 on the Broadkster compared to the others? Many hardcore Gretsch fans don’t think it’s right!

I really like the double cut centre block WF with the same B7 arrangement.

Mind you I don’t see my getting one anytime soon, but still, I’m curious to know your thoughts -  having access to swap between the two.

To be honest Steve I can do without a Bigsby , I don’t use it much other than for a slight shake to some dreamy chords and I don’t notice much difference . The new pickups on the Broadcaster are very good though - very PAF like , more middy and warm than regular Filtertrons

How do Tennessee Roses differ....I’m a bit confused by the difference between those and Country Gents. Also the whole Hilotron thing?

    Lovely.
If that was me I'd be tempted to carry the white theme on and get a Penguin to go with the Broadcaster and Falcon.

I think it's a bit of a mix as they do them in a variety of configurations, but on the one I had it was big body, skinny neck, longer (strat) scale and filtertrons.

You really need Marlin for this stuff :-)

I’m a very shallow chap and don’t think too deeply about buying guitars especially used as I won’t lose much if they don’t stick.

The 6122-1959 I have has fake f holes and tv jones pickups in (SuperTrons I think) . The guitar sounds a lot thicker and jazzier than my others although the bridge does a nice line in classic rock , it sounds good with some gain.

The TR is more classic Gretsch to my ears , proper F holes , regular filtertrons that have that scooped sound - more twang,  big bass and sparkly highs and generally more airy sounding than the Gent.

There may be differences in the bracing but that is a bit over my head tbh !

    What a cool collection

    I can't imagine the pain of re-stringing four Bigsby's though  =)
