De-gloss back of neck with rosewood fretboard (unbound)

I've done a few guitar/bass necks like that before but never really thought about this... Assuming the neck has an unbound rosewood fretboard, would you tape that off along the length (so where the dot markers are, essentially) before sanding, or would you sand right to the edge of the fretboard?

For clarity, I'm only talking about achieving that satin feel, not a full sand-down.
