I always thought that you scalloped a fretboard parallel to the frets???

Better than scalloping the sides of the fretboard to "allow better thumb over playing" like in this Phillips Cleartone Special Guitar Conversion

Irrespective of its merits, that's a very tidy job (in that light, from that angle, with that focus, etc.)

Looks like the result of a very heavy hand.

I can’t imagine ever getting to that stage no matter how much I played. Is it possible this person softened the rosewood (e.g. by using copious amounts of fretboard products) to make it more prone to that?

I think its genuine, but the lighting is making it look worse than it really is

The board can be saved if needed

Even allowing for the lighting it’s hard to believe that’s genuine wear, unless it’s been used as a fretless guitar and then refretted. The frets are hardly worn and the grooves go too close to them for the normal finger positions to make them.

I have seen wear like that on fretless basses with rosewood boards (not ebony) that have been used with roundwound strings though...

  • Strange to see that amount of wear in the fingerboard without damage on the frets. Unless the guitar gets a refret every thing the strings are changed.

  • I've met my match. I thought I was the champion rosewood eroder.
I sometimes think, therefore I am intermittent

Drop of lemon oil and a bit of elbow grease and that'll come up good as new  :)

How hard must you be fretting to cause that much wear on the fretboard?
