Loud hum when volume controls are on zero.

What's Hot

Can anyone help me with a telecaster custom copy which ive spent all of yesterday to sort out with no joy.

All works as it should apart from when either  of the volume controls are turned down to zero  there is a loud earth like  hum ( like the lead is unplugged and held  ).

If I touch any of the metal parts there is only a very slight much improvement.

I've checked the earth wire  to the bridge and it's fine and tried patching leads to different parts with no joy.

Not sure if it's a wiring as it looks fine or a faulty part.
Any help as always would be appreciated.

The volume controls are wired backwards - sometimes called 'independent' because you can turn either one fully down without muting the output in the both-pickups position. Although why you need to do this when you have a switch, I don't know...

Swap the connections so the pickups and tone controls are connected to the outer terminals and the switch to the middle terminals.

Also check the ground connections are all properly connected at the switch, it looks a bit of a mess - although hard to see in the pic.

  • Just from the pics....I can’t see a wire making the earth circuit between the two volume pots.  It’s not clear from the pics that the earth circuit is all there.  Is this a custom, or a deluxe?

It's via the cable shielding to the switch, which is why it matters that those are all connected properly at the switch end.

All sorted now, swapped over the wires and no hum , wish I asked yesterday morning as it would have saved me hours of frustration.

    Thanks as always to ICBM.
