Made a pedal for The Boy

I started my girlfriend’s son on the righteous path with a lefty Squier Strat on his birthday last year, he’s pretty good by now and seriously into Nirvana and Hendrix. Much better than I was after a year for sure! So this year I made him a pedal, an Axis Fuzz from Fuzzdog. I sneaked a photo of a drawing he made of Jimi for his art GCSE and applied that to the housing with some rub-off decal paper (think Letraset). I’ve never had success with waterslide decals, the ink always dissolves in water despite sealing with lacquer. This decal paper gives good results, but you only have one go at applying it, no sliding around.

I had a slight problem with the clear acrylic lacquer “crinkling” the white Hammerite as it dried around the knobs, which I had to touch up. Some light sanding with 2000 grit wet and dry, rubbing compound, and Meguiar’s X20 brought it up reasonably flat and nicely glossy.

“Purple Haze” flavoured LED of course:

Obligatory gut shot. Not super neat but I’m happy with it.

It sounds great, like a souped-up Fuzz Face. I want to build one for myself now!

  • There was a bit of panic last night when it didn’t work, despite the main board testing ok a few days ago. Re-flowing several solder connections did it. The Fuzzdog pcbs are very compact and bijou, and the solder pads are tiny. I’ve got a good iron with a fine tip, and used leaded solder, but the boards never work first time for me. Making things is cool!

Always be yourself! Unless you can be Batman, in which case always be Batman.
My boss told me "dress for the job you want, not the job you have"... now I'm sat in a disciplinary meeting dressed as Batman.

  • I gave it to him over the weekend. He was very happy to get a pedal, especially one with a Jimi Hendrix graphic, and noticed that it had his name on it in tiny writing in the corner... Er, you drew it!
