Landau ... Tales from the bulge
    Sco ... Blue Matter ..
Krantz ... Long to be loose ...
Holdsworth ... all of it !..
Frissel ... Bill Frisell (with Dave Holland and Elvin Jones) also the album with kenny wheeler ...

    and many more ...

Forgot about Long to Be Loose! Love that album

me too its my fave , the live improv stuff is great and has spice and energy  but this is more considered and stands tall for me ...
Funnily enough, I'm really digging 'Signals', even though it was before he had evolved his sound.

One of my fondest gig memories was seeing KCL on the 'Greenwich Mean' tour above a grotty Devon pub.

Also listening to a lot of Steve Khan while I still have free Prime Music. Ditto Big Lazy.

    Friday Night or Van Morrison?

Me too, I guess the Van Morrison has singing on it, but I don’t actually know. The Al di Meola et al’s is one of my favourites too

  • Good thread, definitely gonna nick some ideas from in here...! In addition to those mentioned:

Theme From a Perfect World by Andy Timmons is lovely, just tuneful and not too intense

Been listening to Open Source by Kiko Loureiro, that has potential for those heavier moments.

If you want ultra-ambient background music, Devin Townsend's Guitar Improvisation 1-3 are good. You can barely tell it's guitar though!
I'm just a Maserati in a world of Kias.

The new Jim Campilong/Luca Benedetti album is quite good - Two guitars (https://jimcampilongo1.bandcamp.com/album/two-guitars)

Someone mentioned Julian Lage earlier, his recent 2-3 albums have been on quite heavy rotation for the past couple of years for me. I'd also like to mention Bob Reynolds' "Guitar Band" album. He's actually a sax player, but his band counts both Mark Lettieri and Nir Felder as its members. Highly recommended.

Wes Montgomery - The Fabulous Guitar of  .....

    John Schofield - Uberjam

Jim Hall (& Bill Evans) - Undercurrent & Intermodulation

Passion & Warfare for me. Think that's Steve V at his best. Think he balanced the tuneful and the weird just right on that one.

Satriani The Extremist is good too.

Probably less so know then I used to

In the past then Blow by Blow, Wired and Guitar Workshop would be up there - Maybe with Midnight Blue Kenny Burrell and various Wes Montgomery - I recall Steve Howe the Clap was  a big favourite for me many years ago

My dad got me into Coleman Hawkins so some tracks are good if you like sax players

But today I'm more into the song and less 'guitar hero'

Well there's no point listing mine because they've already been mentioned. However, I've been scribbling away in my notebook and I've got a long list of stuff to listen to now providing I can find it on Spotify, Tidal or Qobuz. Cheers chaps.

It is his definitive album, but I think I prefer Fire Garden. I like all the later ones a lot too.

Oddly, I don’t really like instrumental ‘guitar music’ at all, other than Vai.

Not an instrumental album as such, but my go-to is EC's From The Cradle.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it
