It's just dawned on me, I'm looking at a few fingerstyle lessons on Truefire, and notice quite a lot of people only really use PIM and the 'a' finger doesn't do much. Even rests on the fingerboard when not much is going on.
I always learnt:-
P - EAD
I - G
M - B
A - E
I don't stick to this religiously, but pretty much, occasionally breaking the rule for an out of pattern run.
I'm wondering if the book I learnt my original technique from was a a bit traditionalist, classical based.
Either way I'm trying to learn to use a thumb pick then noticed this and started questioning my technique. I think I'll stop thinking about it and go back to what is natural tomorrow.
What I guess I'm asking is - is there an advantage to using 1 less finger?

play recuerdos de l’al hambra and you need all 4
play some John Prine and Ralph McTell and it’s PIM much of the time
I’m not putting it down, just wondering if I should adopt it for more kind of country blues kind of stuff I’m working on, i.e. is there an advantage to concentrate on limiting the ‘a’ use.
P = pulgar (thumb)
I = indice (index finger)
M = medio (middle finger)
A = anular (ring finger)
What letter if you use your pinky as well?
