Are there any particular brands of general hand tools that are good value for a learner hobbyist like me?

Any rubbish to avoid?

I'm after things like a general saw, a coping saw, some clamps etc. Not the specific luthier stuff.

  • For avoid, I dislike Silverline stuff.

Irwin hand saws and pliers are pretty good in general.

Irwin (Marples) for marking out kit.

    Wera or Wiha for screwdrivers.

    Olfa for knives.

    Empire for squares.

Stanley still do some good tools but quality has declined in recent times.

Bahco for the coping saw. Actually I may have a spare you have have FoC if you like.

Irwin or Bessey for clamps, or Axminster trade are good too.

  • Plenty of good pointers there, thanks @stephen.wood125.

And double thanks on the generous coping saw offer. That would be great. Let me know if there's one available and I'll PM my details over. Obviously I'll happily cover the postage.
