That my lovely 1970's Gibson 'The Paul's' have fretboard dot inlays at the first fret.
It only took 20+ years of having the guitar's, for me to notice.
Pretty trivial & inconsequential, but I guess I was probably too busy enjoying the guitars for what they are, to be bothered about such details.

That I don’t really like 3/5 of my guitars.
That I do like single-channel amps.
That owning even a halfway decent amp pretty much negates the need for drive pedals.
That looking at the Honeyboy Amps webbie could be bad for my wealth.

Oh, and that I’d have managed this year better if only I’d had 2020 vision  ;-)
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

  • I returned to taking lessons after a long break playing and learned that muscle memory can take a few weeks to kick in with what you're learning sometimes.

If someone had told me a year ago that I’d be playing and listening to jazz in December 2020, I would have said they were crazy. But then there are other more outlandish things that have happened this year.

    So yeah, jazz.

That I'm absolutely useless at selling Gear, I mean seriously dire :/

To compensate, I'm not bad at buying Gear  :#

  • That I don't really like 2 of the 3 electrics I have and will probably have trouble moving on the 2.

That you should never ignore adverts for things that claim they'll make you a better player or ads that say things like "The last overdrive pedal you'll ever need".

    - When I'm bored I buy and sell a lot of guitar gear.
    - I'm actually a Tele guy, not a Strat guy.
    - Trying something completely different can actually inspire me to play more and learn new things - I discovered this from getting a Tele and a Strymon Deco.

    - I used to say I hated work travel, but I actually miss it a lot.

  • I've learnt a tiny bit of hybrid picking and have improved my speed quite drastically. I'm now almost as good as I was about a decade ago.

  • I learned that selling an HT1 and some pedals will pay to buy and install a towbar on my motor.

I also improved at recording and mixing in Reaper.

I also learned that some of the songs I recorded (after originally doing so 25 years earlier in some cases) weren't in the keys I originally thought thanks to autotune.

Working from home does not necessarily free up more time to play guitar.

That if you're fairly crappy as a player that uses a £500 Squier strat you don't actually sound any better on a £5000 PRS

  • Modes. But also gained the wisdom of only buying stuff that I know I’d use. Stopped the endless stupid GAS buying .... until next time lol

That its ok to walk away from the guitar over the summer months and concentrate on the family. I don't make a living from music so i should treat it accordingly. Now everyone is happy in the run up to Christmas.  And if you believe that you'll believe anything.....

If you actually sit down and practise for a bit you can get quite good at this guitar malarky.

I have learned that if I actually sit down and practise for a bit -

    1. I may, if I am lucky, improve a modicum

    2. I start fantasising that I am a lot better than I actually am

    3. After said fantasy, I successfully come up with ideas (chord based, as I cannot play anything else very well), which I guess is a good thing - as it feeds the deluded belief that I am better than I actually am.

    And so it goes round.
