looking at this, it seems the largest range of the top artists is of all people Axl Rose. 

Elvis, Freddie Mercury, Paul McCartney are way behind. 

Now they seem to be basing this on their lowest note recorded in a song and highest in another.
for example Elvis sings a B1 in Such a night and a A5 in Mystery Train. 

Now I don’t quite understand this, does B1 mean one semi tone down from Middle C on a piano, and if so, which note on which string would that be on guitar? Or would it be two tones below bottom E?

2 octaves lower.

B1 is on the A string, 2nd fret on a Bass.

I thought Mike Patton had the largest vocal range which kinda makes sense given some of the weird noises at the low end.
