Scammer contacted me via forum beware

Recently had a user contact me with a tip off on a jazzmaster model I was looking to buy, with the e-mail address for a seller. User is based in the US and only has 3 posts, each of which looks semi-genuine but they’re short, fairly generic and didn’t reply any further to their own topics. Smells a bit scammy to me. Is there any consensus on how to spot a scam?

Sounds like you already have a good nose for it. 

My general theory is anything that feels over-formal or goes straight for a “I have the item but you need to pay via [literally any convoluted method that isn’t PayPal or cash] and I won’t meet you in person” is usually a good bet. 

Thankfully few & far between on here and reverb.com but you still need to stay aware

This guy just contacted me saying somebody has a pedal forsale that I’m looking for and provided me with an email address. He only joined today and no other posts, I’m assuming a total scammer

Had the exact same guy contact me yesterday in response to a WTB I’d posted. 

I hadn’t seen this thread but it seemed dodgy. So I emailed to ask if they had it for sale online anywhere. They said no but that doesn’t matter. Just send over my address and how I want to pay. I won’t be doing either of those things.

Nearly just fell for Babs who's just done the same to me. Gave me his mates email. Popped his mates email into Google and it came up on known spammer scammer database!

For those interested, I did see that Babs to was banned but had already emailed his mate. I was interested in the stranger on offer and was given a different pay pal address to make payment. I'd begun to smell a rat and asked for pics of this speaker. Got them pretty quick. Did a quick Google image search and because they are fairly rare, immediately saw the pics I'd been sent, lifted from a 4v year old reverb ad.

Now wondering whether to respond or ignore b and forget it.

Babs shouldn't be able to pm fretboard users. Can that be disabled? Not sure who mods are these days
