Changing strings in the cold

I have to change strings on a few guitars and my heating is generally off during the day until late afternoon unless it's really cold.

Is there any downside to changing strings in a cold room? I will mostly be using D'Addario 9-42 and 9-46 sets.

  • It's absolutely the best time to do it. It hurts less when you stab the end of your fingers if they are mostly numb to start with.

Cryogenically treated strings apparently last longer.

As the room temp subsequently increases, the strings will expand, making the longer, and pitch will reduce

except, so will the neck expand
and if that expands less than the strings expand you would think that would increase the tension and the pitch will rise

except the string runs through the nut and is not fixed, so maybe nothing changes at all

what do I know, I’ve drunk too much wine ;) hic
