XLR to Mono Jackplug wiring question

What connections are used on an XLR plug to convert from balanced to unbalanced use (to a standard mono Jackplug) ?

Thanks.

Always pin 1 to sleeve, usually pin 3 to sleeve (the one next to it) and pin 2 to tip - reversing 2 and 3 will still work normally, but in some cases might cause trouble when connecting something like an amp DI output to another piece of mains-powered equipment. (Or in even rarer cases might be necessary to *solve* a problem.) It's best to do it at the 1/4" plug end - ie use balanced cable - but it will work with a single-core cable too.
