The littlest pedal builder.....

What's Hot
A brief post tonight.

As a Christmas gift for my youngest boy, i put together a 'kit' of parts to make a few simple pedals. Wires, solder, components, veroboard, sockets, layouts etc.

The pedals, in order of complexity being a Catalinbread Naga Viper, a Lumpys Tone Shop Lemon Drop and then Earthquaker Devices Westwood.

The Naga worked perfectly, the Lemon Drop fuzz nicely too. The Westwood a work in progress.

Anyway, here's Isaac trimming some components

That’s brilliant, loads of Dad points to you!

My boss told me "dress for the job you want, not the job you have"... now I'm sat in a disciplinary meeting dressed as Batman.

Thank you. For completeness, here is Isaac's soldering practice (stripped single core weaved in/out)

And the first 2 pedals, i did the spraying and wiring up. Isaac helped attach the bits (switch, pots, sockets etc) to the enclosure.

As well as helping out with an amp build (small hands perfect for a Tweed chassis apparently!) he has expressed an interest in building a guitar (Gibson Firebird has caught his eye). So, gonna be a busy year :)

Fantastic stuff. I don't think enough kids get to do stuff like this anymore. I suspect this will have an influence on his education and career paths.

    Well done dad (and son)!

Thank you :) Isaac has always been interested in things, but normally more so with animals/plants. However, he's shown a real aptitude for putting these pedals together. I'll maybe redo one of the layouts I've collected to make the board bigger and let him do all the soldering on it. It's also had a knock-on effect of inspiring me to learn more about the actual circuits, and how components work together beyond what they do individually. Apart from op-amps. They are the work of the devil.

Well done dad and son.  Enjoy the fruits of your labours.

    Nice to read!
More kids need to get involved with making things.  As a nation we don’t put enough emphasis on making things ourselves.
Noticed that he is named after one of our greatest scientists too !
