Treating chips to poly on edge of top?

I’ve got a well-used Gordon Smith Graduate Slimline with lots of dings around the edge of the top. I’ve used a bit of red nail varnish to cover bare wood and cover any bits that might get caught on a sleeve but I wondered if it might be worth sanding down/smoothing off chips? I don’t want to scratch up the top but I’ve read of people using wire wool for this kind of thing and “buffing up” finish afterwards. Or has that got problems written all over it?! And what would you buff it up with? Any ideas welcome...
