Where's a good place to retire to in North west England or North Wales?

What's Hot

Requirements:
Good value housing
Good NHS
not a scary place
pleasant
decent weather
something attractive about the area
Locals not hostile

So I assume Rhyl and Blackpool are out, because my Mrs says so (for example)
I wondered about Southport and Morecambe, but Mrs not so keen, I suspect these places are much nicer than they were 20-30 years ago

it does vary. The flat coastal areas are very dry, and mid-Cheshire is OK

    Jeepers not Morecambe!

Anglesey boasts  Holyhead which may be the most depressing town in Britain ( I live in the borough of Dudley and my family originate from Tipton, I know my shit towns) although the nice bits of Anglesey are very nice indeed. My relies live in Menai Bridge town. So, choose carefully if looking that way.

Back over to the North East I fancied Alnwick as a town that seemed to have a bit of everything.
Tipton is a small fishing village in the borough of Sandwell.

It's like everywhere.  You'll find big variations across relatively short distances.  When I bought this house off plan exactly the same house, on a near identical development less than 5 miles away, was 20% more because it had a Cheshire rather than a Merseyside postcode.

There's nowt wrong with Morecambe. I've lived there or thereabouts all my life. Unfortunately its suffered like most seaside towns in the UK since holidaymakers jetted off to guaranteed sunshine and no longer came here. A lot of money has been spent on the promenade area and it looks like the Eden project north will be announced soon. One of the OP's requirement though is decent weather and i dont think either North Wales or the North West of England fulfills that!

Sorry I was being a bit OTT for some reason there.
U.K. seaside towns now seem to fall into the category of a bit sad or a bit posh. Going to places like Alderburgh in Suffolk last year it was sooo picturesque but property prices through the roof. Elsewhere seaside towns so often where people drift to and they become very run down.
Maybe that the injection of tourists this year may even revive the traditional British seaside town for a while.

Morecambe has had a nice facelift recently. And it’s got a half decent guitar shop too.

Even if tourists return rather than go abroad because of covid, there's nothing (particularly for young families) to do entertainment wise. In the 60s and 70s there were 2 fairgrounds an open air swimming stadium, 2 piers and about half a dozen cinemas. All that's left is Happy Mount park which has a small splash park, a minature ride on railway and a few swings. It's ok for people my age who are happy with a walk on the prom and a meal and a few drinks but kids would be bored shitless.

Wirral locals are very friendly. So friendly, you might even find some of them trying to get into your car for a chat when you stop at traffic lights...

Last time I went, Frontier land was open, with 55 year old blokes walking around dressed as cowboys on the main road, with wives dressed in 19th century USA dresses. It looked like a creepy League of gentlemen version of Westworld
