So.. what's your favourite distortion pedal?

What's Hot

Just been watching a few videos on legendary Boss DS-1, turns out it has always been a favourite of Steve Vai. I've always liked the Rockbox Boiling Point.
What's your favourite true distortion ( ie not overdrive) pedal?

  • ProCo RAT from the late 80’s.

So much range from mild overdrive to crazy fuzz/distortion, with great tone.

My 2003 Rat is the only straight distortion I’ve ever truly loved.

The Blackstar Dist-X I used to own sounded amazing. I was a complete plonker for selling it.

My Hardwire SC-2 is a damn fine sounding pedal.

I built a Sobbat DB-1 clone, followed the layout correctly but it's definitely not right - tone controls work backwards and it seems like it's got way more gain on tap than any demo I can find of the real deal.

Anyway, I absolutely love it, and have used it loads.

Over my entire life, the good Proco Rats win. But it's so amp dependent since they've all got their own profile of compression, distortion at different frequencies etc. I've had rigs where Rats sound rubbish.

+1 for the MXR Super Badass. It’s a terrible name but it’s a fantastic distortion pedal, the 3 band EQ is spot on and they’re cheap.

Another vote for the MXR Badass. Excellent in every way, apart from it's name.

I have a soft spot for a Rat and the MI audio Super Crunch Box too.

Boss DF-2, narrowly beating the DS-1.

TS-9. A lot of people say the mid range hump makes them sound nasal. It probably does in the bedroom, but it works well live.

Yet another vote for the MXR Super Badass.

I've tried dozens of distortions and this always comes out on top.

The only ones I've used that lasted a long time were the Marshall GV2 and Keeley modded Rat. If I were to ever go back to a clean amp I'd probably go for one of those (or a Guvnor clone) again.
