i don't love any distortion as much as the correct amount of volume to sound "good", need that plus basically any given distortion that doesn't suck (like rats!)

ProCo RAT from the late 80’s.                            +1
Id just like to point out that, despite all the video and DNA evidence, it genuinely wasn't me, your Honour  !

Thorpy Warthog. Anything from overdrive to the edge of fuzz via a wealth of wonderful distortion sounds. Mine lives mainly in the distortion range, but this magic box can do so much more. Stunning pedal.

Tried a few things to avoid using my OG Guvnor, keeping it minty.
Fuzzdog Angry Andy, ( JHS AT clone ) amazes me how good it is for how few components.
It beat a Juansolo Guv clone for me,
4 knobs and a switch, and not many components, amazing really.
MXR 5150 OD is another great thing.

  • Proco Rat is impossible to beat for the money. (The Fat Rat is a made in the US handwired version: excelllent.)

However, my absolute favourite in the Maxon DS-830. It's big and beautiful in every way....

Agree with all those who say Rat - I don't gig now, but when I did I had 2 Rat's - 1 set for crunch rhythm with low gain + vol up - 1 set for solo boost with more gain

I recall a few years ago I was going to buy a Thorphy FX - I saw Adrian at a show and at the time I recall he only had 4 pedals - I tried all 4 and Adrian never pre-warned me about any characteristics  etc, but knew I liked Rats - I picked/purchased a Warthog - He told me after that the Warthog was based on a Rat so A) he was glad that I'd homed in on it and B ) I was glad that my ears stood by what I liked and knew

So IMO go for a Rat or a Warthog

Just realised I always say Rat but I've only ever had modded ones and end up using it on the LED clipping/turbo mode, so I should really say Turbo Rat! Sounds much bigger and more amp-like to me. The normal one is good too but sounds a lot smaller and more compressed I think.

Nearly sold this beauty on here a little back but came to my senses lucky. It's a boutique RAT clone. Love that the LED marks the landing site.

If you’re after that 80s style Rock sound then the LPD 87 is a fantastic pedal that really captures a modded Marshall .

  • If you’re going for a RAT get a Proco. I’ve had two clones, one of which was highly rated and neither had the openness and aggressiveness of my 90s one (which I stupidly sold for £50 a few years ago, before they got cool again).

I also enjoyed the Digitech Hardwire Valve Distortion and the Seymour Duncan Power Grid.

Im curious about this Super Badass though now….
