They do seem to be a bit stupid. I don't kill anything, but try and shepherd things out to safety - I do have a bit of a difficulty with some of them though. I open a window wide and they bugger off in the opposite direction. I open a door for them, and they decide to fly back in. It takes a while sometimes, but we get there in the end.  Both of us seem fairly happy with the outcome.

My fave revolver type would use single paper caps with a metal cartridge though. I could stack 3 or 4 caps for some serious stopping power and it was far more accurate.

They may be stupid but they certainly have a good sense of smell. A couple of years ago my sewer drain blocked and within about 5 minutes of opening the inspection hatch the whole bluebottle population in the north of England descended on my front garden.

I think that they fly on air currents, so if you open a window the current comes from the window into the room. If you have the window and door open with equal air currents I presume they just hover in the middle of the room, confused.

Mind you, I still think that they've got the upper hand because they can fly and I can't.

About five minutes after my first reply, a particularly dopey one was standing around - a giant Sports Direct mug (kept for the purpose of insect removal)  and a large sheet of paper got him or her out safely. Who knew that Mike Ashley could have been so useful?

If I got one of these in the living room then yes I would be very concerned

Bluebottle Jellyfish and Portuguese Man O' War are different.

Bluebottles are smaller and non-fatal, they will definitely make you late for supper though.
I'm from Australia, they are common.
I have been stung before, it is unpleasant but not deadly.

I have never been stung by a PMoW.

Have you seen the fucking eggs they lay?!!  If the dog leaves anything in his bowl, they're on it..  loads of tiny white pods like tiny grains of rice, all lined up neatly in rows.  It's repulsive but you can't look away.  The sheer number of them leads me to believe that the average bluebottle is 90% eggs by volume.  Ewwww.
