I had a cheap 12-string electro-acoustic that I bought on a whim via eBay a long time ago.  It sat around in a cupboard in my spare room getting dusty for several years unplayed because I invested in a much better quality 12-string, so I decided to modify it and scrap it if the experiment failed.  I plugged and reamed the bridge for 6 properly spaced pins, chopped the headstock down leaving 6 machine heads, and cut a new nut for 6 thick strings.  It looks weird with the very wide fingerboard and very short headstock with small button tuners, but strung with the heaviest acoustic strings I could find at a reasonable price and tuned down to C or C#/Db it sounds surprisingly good, and the hole left from the cheap preamp seems to act like an additional sound port.
