It's not as though they're short on profits. It's going to be real interesting to see how this pans out.

Just had a look through my CCs - none are VISA, all are Mastercard. Are VISA CCs rarer these days anyway?

  • My bet is they're trying to pressure Visa into cutting their fees.

But really disruptive if they go through with it - when was the last time anyone didn't accept visa???

I was going to switch to my PayPal but they don’t take that either. I’ll stop buying from Amazon, that’ll show em

I notice that Visa backed debit cards will still be accepted, so no change for me.

Can’t see it happening, Amazon are probably the biggest retailer in the world and Visa’s largest customer. If Visa don’t capitulate they’ll be cutting their nose off to spite their face. What’s better 50% of what you asked or 0%?

P.S. I plucked the numbers from the air :)

This is absolutely just brinksmanship, and with the news of it getting into the media it's playing straight into Amazon's gameplan. 100% guarantee they will find a "solution".

My debit card is Visa.  My Barclaycard used to be MasterCard but - I've only just noticed - it is now Visa.  As it happens, I normally use my (actual) MasterCard on Amazon.

But this is crazy stuff.  We'll be changing the name of Earth to Planet Amazon soon.

  • I strongly suspect this isn't going to happen. Maybe consider the possibility that this is basically Amazon flexing for negotiations on lower transaction fees.

Give it a few weeks, there'll be another announcement walking it back.

Amazon have enough clout that VISA will back down.

not sure Id tie a debit card into online shopping accounts, dont CCs still have "better" protection than debit cards ? (anti-fraud  etc)

All of our cards are Visa.  I'm minded to stop buying stuff from Amazon.

Edit:  the government needs to step in on this.  There are basically only 2 card providers as it is.  This would essentially give Mastercard a monopoly.

    Wis to your edit.

The card companies are onto a loser trying to bully Amazon though, they have so much financial clout.

    Absolutely this.

A debit card essentially says "here's my bank account".  A credit card is at least one-step removed from your bank account, and comes with all the protections that buying on credit offers.  Using a debit card online is not a clever move.

And in a really strange co-incidence, the Amazon credit card (that you get offered to take out every time you visit the site) is on the Mastercard system.

I basically only have a Visa card to make online purchases. Everything I buy online goes through that. It offers way more protection than anything else and even covers you for damage for the first month. If a retailer gets arsey, you can also claw back the money easier. It’s almost what I ended up doing with that Hakko soldering iron, but the retailer eventually refunded me.

Yep it’s a ruse to force visa to lower their charges to reduce Amazon’s operating costs.
If not they’ll lose customers for sure.
I don’t trust Amazon with debit card details and I’m not taking out a new credit card just to pay them.

Just looked it up, and the gulf between them actually surprised me.

    Visa revenue: $20bn
    Amazon revenue: $386bn

Visa's revenue is about 0.5% of Amazon's. Talk about being the little spoon...
