SORTED: Guitar Pro 7 issue I'm having trouble with

I stopped using Guitar Pro a few years ago. I've just restarted with a trial of GP 7.6 to see how it's changed, and I'm having a problem getting something entered with an acoustic solo piece. Can anyone out there help? 

On beat one of a bar, I want to play an open low E that lasts for half the 4/4 bar ( a minim or half note) and an open high e that lasts for half a beat (a semiquaver or eighth note). I can't seem to be able to enter it. GP7 seems to assign the same note length to all notes being started on that beat. If I make the top note a semiquaver it makes the bottom note a semiquaver, and if I make the bottom note a minim, it alters the top note to match.

I'll be digging into the manual, but I did wonder if someone else has solved this already. Ta!

Use different voices , that allows notes with different lengths to be entered at the same position.

the voices are labelled 1,2,3,4 at the top of the left menu.
