"Learn to Sing, or Buy a Van"

I remember hearing a Jimmie Vaughn quote that when asked the best way to have success as a guitarist he said "Learn to sing or buy a van". 

I love the quote, but I've never managed to track down a source for it, or even if it's attributed to the right person. 

Anyone know of where it's written down?

The first half-decent band I got into, I did because I owned a PA. There was a better guitarist who didn't, who didn't. The same applied to the bass player - he got the job because he had a car.
