Best cleaner for guitars?

I recently acquired an old 77 yamaha Les Paul copy and I want to get it back to a good working order. It's worth a little bit so I don't want to strip/ruin the finish, binding hardware or plastics with the wrong type of cleaning solution. Is there anything I should definitely avoid or gravitate to?
