I'm a big fan of pre and post Bernard Suede - I went to see them in November and they were magnificent (Brett was incredible). I really like McAlmont and Butler and the solo stuff. He's even made me seriously consider a Bigsby before I've come to my senses.
I saw them in summer 2019. Brett’s drunk uncle at a wedding dancing was hilarious.

Made me wonder at what point he went from Brett Anderson in Suede to Brett Anderson playing the character Brett Anderson in Suede though.
Around the time he was smoking his own body weight in crack a day. Th Sky Arts documentary is harrowing

  • Yeah, I'm a fan - he's the sort of guitarist I like, that i wish I could emulate, in total service to the song, playing it as he feels it. Not flashy, but I put him in there with the likes of James Honeyman-Scott, Johnny Marr, Boz Boorer, all guitarists who make the song richer, without reall yhaving to show-off too much.

IIRC it was on the CD single with the excellent My Dark Star and the great (despite the fact Butler doesn’t like it himself ) Stay Together.

Yes it was, the early Suede singles were absolute solid gold, pissed away a whole extra classic album there, as the first disc of Sci fi lullabies proves.

I love his playing, the intro to Animal Nitrate still makes the hairs on the back of neck stand up. From a theory point of view it's a grounding soprano note trick but it just sounds so cool. That band were more important to me than the Stone Roses or The Smiths, just a great band and superb songs, even with lineup changes

  • The man who got me into big red semi acoustics. It wasn't the sounds he got alone that drew me in but the way he played.

Exhibit 1: Paris, 1993. Quite possibly the first live performance of Stay Together. It's an absolute monster performance by him.

Exhibit 2: anyone into BB who hasn't heard the extended version of The Wild Ones needs to hear it. The edited version is a great pop song, no doubt and stands up on its own, but the unedited version turns it into a two-half beast. Just brilliant.

Quite a bit of new stuff up on YT with the reissue of PMO. I could listen to him talk all day.
