Daft Question..Gas soldering iron...

I use a gas soldering iron,I find it so much easier to use..
More accurate and less clumsy..
Just my preference..

I have had it a while,,sometimes it doesn't want to light..
I says it has a piezo electric element in it..

Does this set up use a replaceable material you have to replace to ignite the lighter,
or does the spark appear as if by magic..?
How is the friction created..?

Piezo crystals produce a charge when pressure is applied.

Do these crystals need to be replaced....If so,,have you any idea where to get them.. E?   :)

In theory the crystals can last forever.

Its more likely an issue with the triggering mechanism.

I'm not sure about a gas soldering iron, but piezo lighters use a spring loaded hammer in the trigger to strike the crystal and give a spark.

Is there a battery inside for the igniter?
You say, atom bomb. I say, tin of corned beef.

The piezo crystal turns mechanical energy into electricty. This is by the crystal planes snapping back to a lower energy position. If you think about it, this will happen at the weakest planes first which eventually fail and the crystal stops working.

Whether nor not you can get a new one for your gas soldering iron is an open question. I've certainly had a new one for our open flame gas fire. Google is your friend.

I took what I could apart and blew on it..lol..
It is lighting first time again...
I can't see where a crystal or indeed battery could go..
