Glenn Cornick was indispensable to Tull until Anderson sacked him (and they never sounded as good ever again).
Alan Spenner and Joe Osborn improved everything they played on.
You can't create list of bass players and omit Paul McCartney, his melodic and rhythmic chops defined rock and pop bass playing.

Geddy Lee, if he hasn't been mentioned already.
    Kip Winger.
    Doug Pinnick.
    Monty Colvin.
Nick Oliveri (QOTSA went shite once he left).
    Les Claypool.
Gene Simmons (for business reasons, if nothing else).

Geezer Butler. The perfect accompaniment to Iommi's riffs. Plus he wrote Ozzy's lyrics.
Geezer was also the one who knew about films and classical music, in many ways the person who took everything in a direction away from being another blues rock band.

Anyway, I don’t think we've seen Phil Lynott mentioned yet who was a singer, writer and a bass stylist.

Nick is the definitely not indispensable, Josh did the bass the s/t which was their best, and having seen both Kyuss and Kyuss Lives a few times, he was the weakest sounding of the the bassists. Scott Reeder was the man

I'll nominate Nick Zinner's POG pedal in Yeah Yeah Yeahs

I'll agree that Scott Reeder is the man (although not indispensable).  I like Nick Oliveri for his loony songwriting and sort-of-singing contributions, I don't know about his bass playing.

I think Scott Reeder would be a good candidate for the Foo Fighters if they decided to continue (which to be honest doesn't seem likely). He is an absolute beast in Fu Manchu

I was avoiding Phil because the OP mentioned not including singing bassist.

Apparently they have both played in the same side-band, Sun and Sail Club.  If only they could find a guitarist called Scott Reeder.

All these, and also - surprisingly not mentioned yet, given that the band was even half named after him...

Nick Beggs?  I'm not sure who he's indispensable to, but he's good at what he does.

And I could probably say the same of Jeff Pilson, bassist, multi-instrumentalist, producer and member of many bands.
