Starting a new album this week, so I've assembled the troops...

My band's going into the studio later this week to start work on our second album. I decided that this time I don't want everything to be the same AC30 sound so I've done some begging and borrowing (but no stealing) and a round trip to Somerset on Saturday to pick up a Mesa combo, then to Northamptonshire to pick up an Orange from a friend.

The result is a nifty little amp collection that's currently pissing off the missus :D

Not shown: Wangs 15 watt head and Vox Pathfinder 15r.

I'm getting excited about guitar tracking now.

  • How are you finding the Stiletto combo?

Also, are you going to start running a stereo live rig?

Ha! I have nothing you would want! But it might be worth talking to "you know who".

So far I've only used it at conversation volume, but what's surprised me is that it sounds really good down low, even the distortion- a lot of the internet chatter I read had me worrying it was going to be very bright unless cranked, but turning the treble to maybe 11:00 was enough to thicken it right up. The crunch setting has a great Marshally roar when I dig in.

But, it was bought second hand and came in a flightcase, actually bolted at the bottom. So I suspect it's had a fair amount of use and the V30s are probably well broken in (thank god!)

I'm taking it to my practice room tonight, if there's time I'll throw a mic in front of it and record some sounds.

As for stereo live guitar, I've dabbled there before. I think it sounds great to stand in front of a stereo guitar rig, but you're putting a lot of trust in sound men and a lot of the time the PA setup just won't be able to reproduce what you're doing with your backline. That was my experience playing clubs/pubs round the midlands. Definitely one for when I'm playing big stages with my own crew (so not for the foreseeable future!)
