Someone took a small knife to the varnish on the heel of the neck this Gretsch Country Gentleman.
It doesn't look deep but I wonder how much it would cost to put this right?

Update.. It appears to be considerably worse on the back of the neck  :o
This looks expensive to fix..

It's hard to see how deep some of the scratches are but that should sand and buff out I reckon.

I was going say that - you could try some cutting compound/T-cut.

I would try that first. These finishes are quite thick and hard, and it doesn’t look like the damage is very deep - maybe apart from what looks like an indentation roughly in the middle. Even if you could get rid of the rest and leave that, it would look far less obvious.

Probably better to try some fine wet and dry before the T Cut if it's a little deeper.

Through to the wood. Will need sanding filler and full respray of the neck so you dont feel it. I'd expect a repairman to charge £300 or more for that?

First pic I was going to suggest it could be damage from a belt buckle, and could easily be corrected, second pic looks like it is either deliberate knife damage, needing more work, or could be possibly a serious split caused by aggressive truss rod tightening.
Almost looks to me like a split down the middle of the neck, in this case, I'd prefer to know it was deliberate knife work.

Looks like it follows the neck lams.   It might have been caused by wood movement

This. There's a seam in the neck there between the two pieces. I would guess the neck has been flexed very heavily which has opened the joint slightly and shattered the finish off along the glue line.

I would avoid buying this guitar unless it's *really* cheap, as it could cost a substantial amount to fix that and a complete refinish of the neck.

    Looks like a truss-rod issue.

You could always try filling the cracked area with superglue. Let's face it, it couldn't get an awful lot worse. The pain is sanding it back and getting it smooth.

    Good luck.

    lol

I don't believe that was how the crack all the way up the back of the neck happened either - that's definitely stress damage of some sort. If it happened at an airport I suspect the usual cause...

Run away at that price.  It’s at least £1k too expensive given potential damage and repair costs.  I don’t buy the customs story,
