How come Jools went from this to a show that is frequently utter dogshit....

Fortunately, a big chunk of Night Music appears to be on YouTube.

A good many of the bands and artistes who might once have been interesting, provocative or, in any sense, "dangerous" have upped and died.

On a positive note, at least Jools is ensuring that it is still possible for British people to see white dog shit.

It's also worth noting the difference in interview styles - Sanborn asks questions out of genuine curiosity; Holland asks people to confirm his opinion.

His NM interview with Dizzy Gillespie underlines the fact that Jools has always been a self-interested, arrogant knob.

:)  It's not my kind of thing but I didn’t mind it tbh. I did think he needed to hold a note for more than a split second now and then right enough though =)

...and for balance... the indie club skit which was every bit as spot on as the jazz club one, to be fair!

    Absolutely!

I really liked One Quiet Night, but the rest of his that I've heard is completely impenetrable to me.

I'm no überfan but I'm really enjoying his Unity Band stuff. Worth watching the Orchestrion Project programme also (used to be on Prime).

Love this tune. Must re-learn it.

There's a very good Night Music episode devoted to Miles Davis.

Probably but he is not entirely stoopid.

There is an edition of Later… that included Dr. John. In this episode, Holland sits in with Mac's band for a couple of songs. He knew well enough to skulk on Hammond organ, mixed low, rather than be owned by a master Nawlins pianist.

And, remember, piano was the Doctor's second instrument. He was primarily a guitarist until he lost part of a finger.

Dublin Castle. I can still taste the pissy toilet stench in the air.

Dr John Clapton story, as witnessed by a friend.

Clapton guest appearing at a Dr John show. Wanders across stage, picks up the guitar there. Starts to play. Awful noise. Like the guitar is broken. Carries on throughout the song. Clapton mystified.

Song ends, the good Doctor gets up, walks across and removes the plectrum from between the strings.

Addendum: another master NOLA pianist is Jon Cleary...who is also a pretty fine guitar player...must be in the water...
