I like the guy's quiet methodical approach to tackle a bit of mythbusting.
But I've tried several pickups in my Les Paul Custom recently which is making me think differently again. The guitar has the same scooped and percussive character no matter what pickups I've tried in it. This matches the acoustic sound of the guitar. The pickups just flavour the sound
Likewise my Yamaha Revstar, it's really big in the low mids and both sets of pickups I've tried have had this same essential sound
I've tried all combinations of these at volume with my band and both guitars have retained their distinct sound through pickup changes
It could all be bullshit, or it could be a coincidence of pickup selection. I suppose the only way to know is to actually record and A/B
Basically I'm still open minded
That being said, an ES-330 does not sound like Junior
One thing that made a big difference, to my ears, was pickup height. I go as far as adjusting the individual polepieces (where I can) which imo makes for a better sounding guitar. I started a thread about that a while back but nobody was interested. Whereas threads about "tonewood" go for many pages. Go figure.
Interesting
That's far too good a phrase/title to let go to waste. Should be copyrighted
This one had a good degree of objectivity.
Sadly Gringopigs test was lost after he left.
