Favourite low budget films?

I don't know why, but a film sprung into my mind for the first time in a while this week - Truly, Madly, Deeply. I think it's a superb movie, it's the first film I ever saw Alan Rickman in a film and marvelled at his rich voice. Juliet Stephenson is so good as the grieving partner.

If anyone doesn't know what it's about, the tag line on the film is "A woman dealing with inconsolable grief over the death of her partner gets another chance when he returns to earth as a ghost."

Anyway, it was made on an incredibly small budget - $650,000, and the two stars and director won 6 awards between them.

The other that springs to mind is Gregory's girl, which had an insanely low budget of just £200,000! One of my favourite films ever, I have watched it so many times, it just captures my high school years vibe so well. I get the most warm feeling inside every time I put it on and the theme music starts up. Another award winning film (3)

Personally I like low budget films, they are usually well scripted. Got any faves? I fancy finding some good new ones.

Good call in both choices. Gregory's Girl is great, as are almost all of Bill Forsyth's films.

I'd suggest Alex Cox's "Repo Man", budget bonkers & brilliant.

Evil dead and Evil dead2, utterly cheesy, completely daft but brilliant.

Kes is excellent like the rest of Loache's offerings. Elsewhere the geek sci fi parody 'Paul' can't have been expensive and made me piss myself having watched it by accident on French TV.

Primer, a mind-bending low budget movie from 2004 about the accidental discovery of time travel. It was produced on a budget of $7000 and a crew of five people. It's an incredible film and bears repeated views.

Is The Warriors (1979) considered low budget? Remember turning it on on BBC2 one random night during some summer years ago and just being hit by the music in the opening credits. Well worth a watch. Amazing soundtrack.

    Here it is on YouTube:
