I just saw this in the BBC news story:
Despite her success... Ms Nicholls had initially considered leaving the show. But she was convinced otherwise by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who described her character as the "first non-stereotypical role portrayed by a black woman in television history".

    Wow.  Never heard that before.

I'm not really a Star Trek fan, but as a kid I did love the original series.  This is said news.  RIP.

Nichelle Nichols, who played Lieutenant Uhura in Star Trek The Original series, has just passed away from heart failure at the age of 89.  She was truly a real trail blazer, one of the first African Americans to star in a prime time show - Star Trek, as well as the first interacial kiss to be shown on TV between Lieutenant Uhura, and Captain Kirk.  Not to mention all of her work over the years working with NASA, promoting diversity in the American Space program, and encouraging generations or girls and young women to reach for the stars.
She was truly one of the best and most interesting characters especially when you consider when The Original Series was made - 1960's.

When Star Trek arrived in 66 it showed the world a brave new future in a far better place. Nichelle took the opportunity to show a brave new present. It’s probably the still the biggest thing that the franchise has achieved and seeing the character back on our screens is a wonderful hat tip to her legacy  <3

It wasn't the first inter-racial kiss on TV. That's just one of those half truths that has been accepted as fact. It might be the first on American TV.

She was my Star Trek heartthrob when I was a young chap, a truly beautiful woman . . She was also a Trail Blazer and an Activist . .  Respect  . . . She will be sadly missed . . RIP Nichelle Nichols :-(
Id just like to point out that, despite all the video and DNA evidence, it genuinely wasn't me, your Honour  !
