    Without trying to pretend that I know the details off by heart  if you read the Wikipedia entry for Black Betty the song and even recorded versions predate LeadBelly’s well known version. The Ram Jam Band off by over 40 years. 
    Lots of interpretations of what it means as well. 
    Anyway, yes the Ram Jam version is an edit of the Starstruck version so it’s different, much more frantic than I remember? Just noticing something like phasing on the bass, very brave production choice for 1973.
