Charvel J-50BC pickup sounds weak.

Any had any experience with the charvel model 6 pickups with active boost. 


The one I currently have the pickups sound quite weak compared to say a normal strat running through the same amp and always remain quite clean  sounding rather than driving the amp, is this normal? 

It's the one with the active mid boost system powered by a 9v battery.

The J-50BC is a comparatively modest output passive humbucker, particularly compared to the ubiquitous J-90. Low output suggests one of the following:
1) Poor ground connection.
2) One coil out of circuit.
3) The four output conductor wires connected in the wrong order.

Q1: Have you rewired the guitar recently?
Q2: Are all of the control components original?

Some of those parts are now thirty five years old and were not necessarily the highest quality to begin with. I would check the on/off switch first.
