But it is very frustrating to get a letter through the post saying they've changed policy and will no longer insure your vehicle!

  • I imagine , I hope that does not count as "refused" insurance... Did you get problems insuring elsewhere? Did they give you proof of ncd?

  • Feck, just realised this Discussion was ripe for a 'that sounds like a fair swap ' joke but I never made it. Although, TBH, I've got enough teenagers in this house already.

Had a similar experience with both Adrian Flux and Footman James - quite happy to take your money, then withdraw the cover for your renewal.  But it worked out great because we went to Peter James instead and have three cars insured for £201 a year!
My experience wasn't 'quite' like that mate. I don't really blame Adrian Flux.
I had my Mini Cooper insured in their specialist 'Mini Scheme' which provides and 'Agreed Valuation' based on current date photos of the vehicle. My Mini had a replacement value of £5K but the book price was £1.5K in fact trade in value was even less (We Buy Any Car etc).
I changed my occupation (kinda, self employed as I am) which put me in a VERY high insurance bracket and none of the companies that Flux deal with would give an agreed value on the car taking my occupation into account.

My new broker said that Sabre will give insurance on a individual basis rather than trying to fit you into a predefined occupation category. Apparently they like to have people on their books that don't fit the usual Plumber, Clerical, Teacher etc etc categories.

No problem getting insurance elsewhere at all.  :)

That's where there's still a market for these small specialist insurers.

One time, very annoyingly, Footman James suddenly stopped insuring classic campervans, even though they carried on advertising in Classic Camper sites and magazines.  We had three cars insured with them, and removed them all elsewhere.

Yeah totally. Adrian Flux could still get me a policy and were definitely trying to sell me one right to the point that I said "do you really expect me to drive a £5K car around knowing I'll get a fifth back if the worst happens".

I ended up paying a higher premium but I'm covered to the value of replacement.

Yep looked at third party only . Difference is only £50...
Only £50, that's a lot of money to some of us!

Personally I think you are better off doing without a car until at least in your 20s, although admittedly some need one for work. The insurance premiums are ridiculous.

Another annoying fact - some insurance companies used to insure girls for less as they are statistically safer, however, that was ruled unfair by some bigwig legal tw*t so all girls insurance went up! Whaaaat?????? what is the point in that? just more money for insurance companies,

It doesn't matter if the insurance company is rubbish if you don't get into any accidents.
I agree with this in a way - doesn't matter how cheap or expensive the insurance is, if you end up having to make a claim for some reason, they will ALL try to avoid paying out what you may be entitled to.

Legalised, compulsory robbery is what it is.
