Bands. Guitarists. No bassists.

What's Hot
Following on from the 2 bassists thread in Off Topic, what about bands with no bassists. I can't think of a whole lot but I am sure there are many. Obvious one is White Stripes, also there was an English lass (name escapes me, a bit like PJ Harvey, who did gigs with drums, guitar, and someone on keys/harmonium).
Aussies Jeff Lang and John Butler have done gigs with just drummers.
Durruti Column sometimes had no bass player live. Some smaller indie bands like Moon Duo/ Wooden Shijps used synths instead of a bass player. Not forgetting Seasick Steve until JPJ started jamming with him.

  • Just a personal selection, and it's more generally about "non-standard" band line-ups (with a focus on alt/indie), but there's a few in this 'list' video I put together a few weeks back...

A sprinkling of two bassist bands in there too, for good measure!

  • The Graveltones - like Royal Blood but with a guitarist, no bassist.

  • Go back to Hound Dog Taylor and the Houserockers to understand where The White Stripes, The Black Keys and others got their inspiration.
Plenty of artistes where organ/keyboard provides a bass line. Some of Grant Green, I think some Freddie King , Matt Schofield, probably half the eighties.

Metallica - And Justice For All period.

I’m so bored I might as well be listening to Pink Floyd

  • Wye Oak, a lot of the time. Less well known two-piece: Diet Cig.

Although they do use a bassist sometimes now. Maximum hipster aesthetic, but they have made some cool music. Alex, the guitarist, was a total beginner when they started the band. Confidence is a big asset!

  • My two favourites other than White Stripes (who are a given for any list of "bands with no bassist) are Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Kills. I see YYY have already been mentioned

The Doors have already been mentioned as well.

White Stripes were influenced (ie, they took the same style basically) of bands like The Flat Duo Jets and The Soledad Brothers, who had no bassists either

Then The Black Keys came along and did the same but made it sound a bit easier on the ear, I guess
Please note my communication is not very good, so please be patient with me

Slaves had just drums and guitar. The drummer/singer stands up and hits his horizontally mounted bass drum with sticks. Pretty good band live.

  • Hate it. Hate, hate, hate it.

Bands usually have a bassist for a reason….and it sure isn’t their intellectual conversational skills.

It’s so there is someone who has a clue how the PA works.

And to interpret for the drummer.

    :)

  • The Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio. It's mostly the organ, but there's no bass player.

The Doors had bassists in the studio, but used Ray's left hand on a Fender Rhodes piano bass when playing live.
