Arrived on honeymoon today after a great weekend, only to receive a call from a workmate to say an ex-boss of mine (only moved on in June) had died suddenly today in work, of a suspected heart attack.

He was a good bloke and leaves behind a wife and teenage daughter - he would have been 51 next weekend. He did more than anyone else to help and encourage me back into work last year after illness - for that I'll be forever in his debt.

RIP Dave - colleague and friend.

It’s good that you posted this. Gawd it makes you think. A good bloke with a wife and teenage daughter.

The thing is that at 50 years old you’re “too young to die”. So…

What do you want to do? What do you want to change?

    Who are you?

    What did you do?

That's a tough break, mate, and I'm sorry to hear it.

A similar thing happened to a mate of mine in 1999 - heart attack in bed Easter Sunday morning at 51.  It made us realisethat life was for living, so after we left the funeral service we went straight to a travel agent and booked our first ever holiday abroad.

Try not to let it spoil your honeymoon...

    Cheers,
    Al.

  • That is rough mate and no age at all.

Feel for his family and friends like yourself.

  • Yep, no age at all! Glad he helped you out and you're remembering him for it, and thoughts to his family.

...Treat each day like it's your last
Bah! You say that, but that's what I did yesterday ... told the boss what I thought of him, and got a case of champagne and a couple of whores to share it with ... and now I'm unemployed, and the wife's really got the hump.

Mind you, perhaps I shouldn't have asked her to take the empties out.

Seriously though, really sorry to hear of that. We had a colleague at work die suddenly a few years back. He was six months younger than me, with wife and two young kids. Still think about him a lot. Now, at least, along with the sadness there's a feeling of being really glad to have met him. But it's a real shock to get over.

  • Awful story - and given I'm 51 next birthday, one which resonates with me.

I'm very sorry to hear of your (and his friends' and family's) loss.

Sounds like he was a good guy - which makes it all the more sad.

  • Thanks for the kind words, guys. Still numb over it. I'm glad I told him recently how much he'd helped me get back into work.

My condolences to all. And 50 is too young to die. RIP.
