    IMO you get bands (or individuals) who can span multiple talent pools ... Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy come to mind immediately. The Corries (especially Roy Williamson) would be another good example ... Shane McGowan & The Pogues another, or the Amoo brothers & The Real Thing yet another.

    I agree with @axisus ; ref the quality of Always with me, always with you ... so I've learned to play it (reasonably well I think). I never tire of it and always try to play it better ... it's just a wonderful melody and beautifully conceived ... it speaks without words.

    We old crusties on tFB don't often consider such questions in the context of contemporary artists ... what about Taylor Swift for example ... I know nowt about her but she is reputedly gifted musically and as a writer and can convey meaning and intent. 

    Perhaps the OP is really referring to 'all round ability'  ... like Macca, Stevie Wonder and Prince.
