At the Pershing is probably my favourite live album. Flawless from start to finish

Another genius gone. Miles Davis used to send pianists to his concerts to 'learn to do the Ahmad Jamal thing'...

I've dipped into him from time to time but know him mainly as an influence on the phrasing of Miles Davis who was a huge fan at a time when Jamal was often dismissed as just a notch above a cocktail pianist. I tend to prefer jazzers who don’t throw the kitchen sink at you (Monk, Bill Evans, Jim Hall, Chet Baker, Miles himself) so I should probably know him better than I do. I’ll be digging out some of his stuff in the next few days.

Wow, 92?!  I honestly thought he was long gone.

I can remember listening to him on my dad's lp's when I was only 10 or 11, and I can still recall things like Perfidia, Poinciana, The Donkey Serenade...

RIP - one of the greats.
