Wax Potting Q

I recently bought a custom built guitar from the Brum show; the seller had rushed the build a bit and the magnets in the P90s were out of phase, meaning that the middle position was overly `honky'.  I tried to like the tone and get accustomed to it, but I failed, so took the neck pickup out and flipped the magnets, now I'm happy with the sound.

When I took the cover off, there was a ton of wax inside; I managed to preserve most of it, but some inevitably cracked and came out.

Is it really necessary to pack P90s so full of wax?  It's quite a hot pickup (8.1k), so I suspect the winder did this to reduce the amount of feedback.

I'll probably play with some magnet swaps in this pickup to brighten it a bit, so it'll be out again at some point and wondering about wax issues in the future.
