i thought that i could but its not moving, just want to check whether i cant, or whether i should just 'pull harder' or whether there is a certain angle to pull at
thanks

  • wear goggles & a mask. stand as far back as you can. tip in lots of caustic soda. you won't need to lift that lid.

Ooh err, I've never seen a drain cover like that. I'd be tempted to run some wd40 round the edges and then try to see if it lifts, otherwise do what Phil said.

What is that band of metal with a cat shit on top of it doing?  I think that 'Handle' is a support for a grate cover, or you could try pulling it sideway and then up.

there was a lot of cement/brick/stone/sand dust and bits in the one on the other side, so i think its that kind of stuff blocking it rather than organic materials that will dissolve easier with chemicals
i was able to scoop the compacted grey sludge out by hand on the open part, just not able to access any further into the pipe.
i'm pretty sure it pulls up and lifts out ... but dont want to really yank on it until i know for sure

Assuming you've tried drain rods? Getting that cover up might not get you much further anyway. I quite like using drain rods, it's my most manly activity.

i was hoping that if i could lift that up then it would give me better rod access, that was my plan a. plan b is giving it a good rodding without lifting its 'skirt' first

I think he wants to lift it out because he fancies licking it underneath.  Or is that the bin bag armed, militant bicyclist?

So is that actually a metal part? Looks like it's all cast concrete ? Is the drain actually blocked, or is it just a mission to see what's in there !

there are no metal parts, the colours are washed out in the picture, its roof tile/sticking plaster coloured plastic
the drain is blocked and theres another on just a couple of feet away thats the same.
filled with dust/sand/brick gunk probably, and getting backed up with kitchen sink/dishwasher bits.

I am trying to see why it seems to have that separator just on that one section?

Is there a lid that goes over it?

there is that plastic grill you can sort of see in the bottom left corner, plus the other one has another flat bit that sits on top of it.
the ridge/separtor kind of looks grippy, which adds to the idea that i can lift it out

Probably the blockage is downstream anyway - I'd be tempted to go to the manhole cover further away and see if it's full of m-skah

If you know someone with a Karcher. They have attachments now that are useful for this. Basically a thin rubber hose which helps blast all the gunk away.
