Very much depends on what stage. If it has not spread and has localised then a lot of bowel can be removed, so aggressive chemo may not be nessesary.

Its what killed my father. Died at 48 from it.

Spread really fast and he died within 3-4 months of being diagnosed. That was 20 years ago and I think treatment has moved on a lot since then. If caught early you have a better chance of getting through it.

Macmillan nurses were fantastic in the end.

But its a horrible way to go and tore my family apart.

All the best with for your mum fella and remember treatment is a lot better now than when my father was diagnosed.

Bad news mate and fingers crossed for a great outcome.

As has been said if it is early on then things can go well amd an op rather than chemo can sort it.

More and more people are surviving cancers of all types.

Best wishes to you and yours.

My Mother-in-law died of it in 1987.  She must have had it for years, but never said anything until it was too late.

I hope you've found it in time, and I wish you both the best with it.

    Cheers,
    Al.

Sorry to hear about that and as others have said I hope they caught it early on.

Like @stonevibe it robbed me of my Dad in '98 - he was 58. The scheduled treatment seemed to take ages to get done & by the time it was due to occur we found out that it had spread and an operation wouldn't help. It was a bad 3 months.

Medicine has moved on since then so try to keep your Mum staying positive - best wishes.

    Seemed like a good idea.....

  • Macmillan. Seriously, they are excellent.

I'm getting in touch with them for my nan, who's just been diagnosed with multiple myeloma yesterday. :( :( :( she lives with us, so she'll be getting the best care in the world, but myeloma is exceptionally painful and, like any other cancer, it's going to be a tough ride for all of us.

I've worked with a lot of people with cancer in hospital, and I can safely say that your best bet is to talk to them. They are always being talked about by relatives, and I'm always hearing things like "I don't know how we'd cope without them".

Apologies for sounding like a fan boy, but they really are exceptional.

All the best wishes for you and your family mate.

    Update:

All seems to be in our favour.

Mum has religiously sent back these home test kits over the years and that's what the trigger was. So they know it's happened in last 12 months.

The key is swift diagnosis of the offending area. Best case, small polyps.

As noted above, bowels are big things so can take a lot of reduction if needed.

    All crossed.

    Thanks for wishes.

Our next door but one neighbour was diagnosed 3 years ago, he is 73. He had chemo and a big op which basically removed half his stomach. But he came through it and is alive and kicking. He isn't as strong as he used to be, gets knackered fairly quick but he's alive and enjoying life. His was pretty advanced when they found it so hopefully your mum has a good chance. All the very best to you and your mum.
